2010 Game Summaries

Practice -- March 30, 2010

Practice -- April 13, 2010

Game 1, April 21, 2010 @ Double Mercy!!
by Web Mistress

Bummer! It rained.

Game 2, April 26, 2010 vs Titans
by Keith Martin

Goats topple Titans, 18-14.

Goat Rookie Luke Dahl debuts.

Offensive highlights include home runs by Dave and Eli, and a double by Lloyd. The Goats clubbed 20 singles, including Luke's first hit as a Goat. Five Goats scored multiple runs, but I imagine that Kevin H and Dave provided the most thrills on the basepaths.

Game 3, May 4, 2010 @ Paper Tigers
by Keith Martin

Goats pounced upon by Paper Tigers, 18-5.

Goat Rookies Jennifer Ibaven and Greg Gerig played their first game. Jennifer also provided Ma and Pa as cheerios. Greg, where's your entourage? Paula returned to the herd after an eight year walkabout. Welcome back! As for the game, well, the Tigers just seem to have our number lately. The Goats busted loose for a whopping two runs in the 6th, but it was no match for the eight runs posted by the Tigers in the 2nd.

Defensive highlights? - Apparently not. The outfield took credit for catching several flies, but the most memorable fly fell into the midst of our Bermuda Triangle Defense for a Texas League hit.

Offensive highlights were slim in a severe power-outage. Highlights include doubles by Dave and Dean. Paula was 2/2 in her return, Cindy was 3/3, and Greg got his first hit as a Goat.

Game 4, May 12, 2010 @ Crawdads
by Keith Martin

Goats crack Crawdads, 13-8.

This week Glenn Reeves returned, and brought forth Goat-Sprout Rookies Alex and Kevin to play, and his father to anchor the Peanut Gallery. Goat Rookie Uyen-Uyen Vo, (that's "Win-Win"), made her Goat debut. Twenty Goats filled the roster for Big Dave, and it was a beautiful night for a game.

After trailing by two at the end of one, Lloyd settled in and threw two shutout innings at the 'Dads. The Goats responded with three innings of four or more runs and never looked back.

Defensive highlights include a nice Willy Mays over-the-shoulder grab by Luke, and somebody (Luke?) reached out to steal a hot line drive. The Reeves boys were banished to the outfield, where Alex at least got to show off a strong arm. Keith turned a tag-and-throw double play with Paula.

Offensively, the Goat Power returned in the form of four homers and three doubles, on top of 18 singles. Even with 20 players, everybody got two at-bats. Amazing. Homers were courtesy of Dave, Keizo, Keith, and Alex vL; doubles were added by Lloyd, Keith, and Eli. Uyen-Uyen got her first Goat hit; as did Jennifer and Alex R, who also had their first multi-hit Goat games. Paula went for 2/2 again. Offensive near misses were hot line drives by Luke to center and Eli to short that went for outs.

Game 5, May 19, 2010 @ Wild Turkeys
by Keith Martin

Goats trounced by Turkeys 18-12

It was another beautiful day for a game; but it was an ugly first inning for the Goat defense. After scoring two to open the Game, the Goats had to call in their defensive ringer, Mr. Mercy, to record the final out in the first. The Goats climbed back, but couldn't complete the comeback. The Goats even threw a famous two-out rally at the Turkeys in the 5th, but that only plated four before the gravy ran out.

The good news is that Goat Rookies Bob Ibaven and Spencer Reeves played in their first Goat game.

Defensive highlights include a double play by Dean and Alex R, and Alex V cut down a greedy runner with a nice throw from left to Luke at third. The Keystone Kops award goes to Eli, for his comic stylings at short. He was tireless in his efforts, though twice we saw him pause for naps, flat on his back, after chasing and just missing flies that flourished just beyond second base. And here's an interesting stat for the managers: Keizo surrendered 14 runs from the mound. Uyen-Uyen only gave up four ...

Offensive highlights include a home run by Alex V, triples by Dave and Uyen-Uyen, and a double by Alex V. Bob went 2/2 in his debut, and Spencer got his first Goat hit. Keizo, Glenn, Kevin R, Danielle, and Uyen-Uyen also went 2/2. Sadly, Dean was cut down at the plate by the center fielder, ending the 2nd inning rally.

Game 6, May 25, 2010 @ Voodoo TOAD Fury
by Keith Martin

Goats Squish TOADs and Taste Tom's Tacos, 26-18

Goat Herder Tom offered free tacos for all at Los Gringos if the Goats would squish the TOADs. Apparently no clubhouse speech was ever more inspirational as the Goats toppled their long time rivals in a fun game that went the full seven innings. There may be rain in Spain, but there are no rain checks on the tacos.

Injury Report: Bob pulled a groin and retired after the 4th. Jennifer took a bad hop at second to the shoulder. And Keith nailed Paula below the knee with a low-throw one-hopper. We'll take your word for it if any of these bruises grow to Keizo-class size.

Defensive highlights include Paula's Crane Stance at first base after being hit by Keith (she'll be seen in Karate Kid XII later this summer). Alex had a nice play deep in the hole at short, and Marc had a nice running catch to seal the win. Keith and Cindy keep trying for the 5-4-3 double play. Tacos are on Cindy when we do!

Offensive highlights include a monster grand slam by Alex V that put the TOADs in mercy in the 6th, a triple by Uyen-Uyen, and doubles by Luke, Jennifer, Lloyd, and Marc (2). Lloyd and Marc, as usual, were robbed of extra bases by the trees. The Goats added 26 singles to the attack, which resulted in five solid run-scoring innings.

Game 7, June 2, 2010 @ Double Mercy!!
by Keith Martin

Goats Dumped by Double Mercy!! 14-13

Things were looking good before the game as the field got a fresh grooming from the lawn mower dude. But we should have known something was up when the Caddyshack Gopher popped up near the Goat dugout. The gopher must have distracted the Goat offense into LA Dodger mode as we only scored in two innings. Meanwhile, the Mercy squad bit into the Goat lead almost every inning and took the game in the bottom of the 6th.

Defensive highlights include Luke and Keith handling some hot line drives. Next week we'll work on the easy grounders. Liana also had a nice running catch out in right-center, but then she pulled her nonchalant Manny Ramirez impression and fluttered through the outfield like she was a butterfly in the Rose Parade. Fortunately, the runners were awed by the spectacle and failed to tag-up and advance. Marc was as lonely as the Maytag Repair Man out in left field. Next week he'll see lots of action against the Homers.

Offensive highlights include home runs by Dave, Keith, and Marc; and doubles by Lloyd and Marc. Luke went 3/3.

Game 8, June 7, 2010 @ Homers
by Keith Martin

Goats Hobbled by Homers, 15+ -9

Goat call-up John Cookson (Liana's nephew) made his first appearance. The Goats were blanked the first two innings and were in mercy by the end of the third. They got out of mercy in the sixth, but the Goat scoring stopped there.

Defensive highlights include solid play at short by Kevin R. Liana had two nice catches at rover, including a running basket catch. However, this game the opposing runners all tagged and scored during her victory lap. Some Goats are still gushing about Keizo's knuckle-ball, but ... the Homers loved it most of all and hammered 13 runs home while Keith only gave up two.

Offensive highlights include doubles by Luke and Dave (2). Jackie and Uyen-Uyen went 2/2. Derek was tagged out at the plate after going back to touch third on what would have been a triple by Luke. Dave tried to stretch a single into a homer and was finally nailed at third. Hey, let's not get greedy out there!

Game 9, June 15, 2010 vs L.A. Radars
by Keith Martin

Goats Topped by Radars, 16-18

The Goats scored seven in the bottom of the 1st. The Radars got fat off of Keith's pitching in the 4th. Other stuff happened in between. The Radars picked up two in the last (5th) inning - the Goats could only manage one.

Ariel Kepher made her Goat debut and went 3/3. Now she's leaving, on that midnight train to Dallas.

Offensive highlights include a grand slam by Alex, doubles by Jose, Dave (2), Keizo, Keith (2), and Marc. Greg, Cindy, Jennifer, and Keith also went 3/3.

Game 10, June 21, 2010 vs Bruisers
by Keith Martin

Goats Tie Up Bruisers, 12-12

Only eight Goats braved the beautiful sunshine and cool breezes to battle the Bruisers. The Bruisers lent us a "non-defensive" catcher so we could cover all fields. Thus Dave sent out the "All-Girl Outfield" of Liana, Uyen-Uyen, and Jennifer, and Cindy mixed in with the otherwise "All-Boy Infield" of Dave, Luke, and Larry, with Keith pitching.

Tied after one, the Bruisers blanked the Goats twice and took the lead. Then the Goats blanked them back for three innings and took the lead. The Bruisers took the final lead in the top of the 6th. Keith's homer tied it, but the Goats couldn't get anyone on after that. This was a fun game with plenty of good- natured ribbing across the lines.

Defensive highlights include solid play from Luke at short while Larry gobbled up everything at first. Uyen-Uyen joins the ranks of Reggie Jackson and Jose Canseco as outfielders who have had fly balls jump out of their gloves and hit them on the head. Uyen-Uyen also hit herself with her bat after hitting a worm- killing dribbler. At least she reached base for that effort. This week Luke and Cindy tried for the 6-4-3 double play. Last week Alex tried the same thing. One of these days, Cindy, one of these days!

Offensive highlights include a home run by Keith and doubles by Luke, Dave, and Keith.

Game 11, June 29, 2010 vs Deep Space Cadets
by Keith Martin

Goats Crush Cadets 32-12

Several Cadets were unaware of the name of their opponents prior to the game. I think they know now. The Cadets were short of players, so Alex and Liana defected. When a couple of Cadets finally showed up just prior to the start, they gave Alex back.

After the Goats gave up six runs in the first, Paula fired the first reply - a lead-off home run. By the time the smoke had cleared all but one of the Goat batters had taken a swing and the Goats had taken the lead. The Cadets answered with five. Again, the Goats plated seven to retake the lead. In the third and fourth innings the Goats finally played some defense. The offense kept blasting, scoring 10 in the third (which sent some Cadets to early showers) and eight in the fourth.

Offensive highlights include home runs by Paula, Keith, and Alex V; and doubles by Dave (2), Lloyd, Keith (2), Marc, Paula, and Alex V.

Game 12, July 13, 2010 vs Eclectic Eccentrics
by Keith Martin

Goats Erase Eclectic Eccentrics 14-6

Paul the Octopus might have picked this one, had he not retired in his prime. The teams were tied at five after the 1st. Then the Goat defense settled in and held the EEs to only one run after that. The Goats had three shutout innings thrown at them, but strung a couple of rallies together to get nine more runs.

Team Reeves was almost complete with Claire and Serena present to lead cheers while Alex was stuck at work. We expect to see Serena on the field later this summer. Team Keith was missing, but Sonya showed up to say hello and a quick goodbye.

Offensive highlights include a triple by Paula and doubles by Greg, Keith (2), Marc (3), and Alex V. Paula, Keith, Marc, and Spencer went 3/3. Glenn and Uyen-Uyen had loud line drive outs. Better luck next time.

Game 13, July 21, 2010 vs Paper Tigers
by Keith Martin

Goats Trashed by Paper Tigers 9-24

On a warm muggy day, when apparently the Goats stayed away as long as possible to not play, not play well they did and mugged were they. The Tigers almost put the Goats in mercy in the 1st, and did put them there in the 2nd. The Goats mounted a comeback in the 3rd, but were then double-mercied in the fourth. Back to mere mercy in the 5th, and then back to double-mercy in the 6th. When Bob popped out to the pitcher in the bottom of the 6th he proclaimed "Oh no, I've killed the Rally Monkey!" Don't worry Bob, the Rally Monkey is in a different time zone. You probably just got his Mini-me.

The defensive highlight was Keith's 100 pitch shutout 5th inning.

Offensive highlights include home runs by Bob, Keizo, and Keith and Dave (back-to-back), a triple by Keizo, and doubles by Keith (2), Mark and Glenn. Keith, Mark and Glenn went 3/3.

Paula went on the DL with a broken toe. Jackie is still on the DL, fighting the glucose rollercoaster. Get better soon - we miss you!

Game 14, July 27, 2010 @ L.A. Radars
by Lloyd Keith

Goats zapped by LA Radars 8-28

The game started off well for the Goats. The first four batters got on base and all scored, making it a good productive first at bat. The Radars came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning and it looked to be a real duel. A double play killed the second inning rally for the Goats. In the bottom of the inning, the Goats had their opportunity to reciprocate. Slower runner on first, the batter hit a one-hopper to Lloyd and then fell down in the batter’s box, Alex covered at second, and then ….. the ball dribbled away from Alex; After that it was all downhill for the Goats. The Radars took advantage of the two gift outs plus 5 additional errors to score 11. Everything the Radars hit seemed to be guided by radar and was just out of reach of the Goats. On the other hand, the Radars had magnetic gloves in the field. Keizo hit a screaming line drive that the outstretched shortstop speared in the end of his glove. The Radars had a ringer female at third who made numerous plays on smashes and even almost threw out a speeding Alex at first on a bang-bang play.

Offensive highlights included: a home run by Luke, a triple by Alex, doubles by Luke, Keizo, Lloyd (2), and Marc (2) [love those lefties hitting the trees]. The coach was deemed a failure and must never be in charge of the team again.

Game 15, August 4, 2010 vs Homers
by Keith Martin

Goats Humbled by Homers, 12-21

It was tied after four, but after the top half of the 7th it was almost double mercy for the Goats. The Goats rallied for five to shrink the deficit below double digits.

Offensive highlights include doubles by Bob, Lloyd (2), Dean, Marc, and Uyen-Uyen.

Game 16, August 9, 2010 vs Deep Space Cadets
by Keith Martin

Goats Creep Past Cadets, 11-9

The Cadets were minus two women, so they dropped the rover and second base to field only eight. The Goats offered to provide a catcher, but the Cadets were sticking to their laser guns. Apparently, the Goats aren't accustomed to such large holes out in the field and, except for Tom's triple, could only manage to knock out singles. It went back and forth for five innings, mostly due to Keith's errors. (Meager goat brain still on vacation.) The Goats scored in the bottom of the fifth to break the tie and the three game skid.

Offensive highlights include a triple by Tom. We might have had some other highlights, but Jennifer and Uyen-Uyen had line drives that were chased down by the Cadet defense.

Defensive highlights include a great relay from Alex in mid-center to Tom at home that almost erased a home run.

Game 17, August 16, 2010 @ Crawdads
by Keith Martin

Goats Clawed By Crawdads, 11-17

The Mudville Nine took the South Park on a hot August night. Everything went south for the Goats from there. The Crawdads found all the gaps and the Goats found themselves in mercy after three.

Gee, are we all on the wrong team? The Goats started their comeback drive in the fourth with five, but wilted in order in the fifth. Uyen-Uyen got caught in a double-play pickle between 2nd and 3rd to end the game. Looks like Big Dave has yet another Mini-Me.

Defensive highlights include Tom's self-defense stab of a hot line drive to the face.

Offensive highlights include a triple by Uyen-Uyen and doubles by Luke, Greg, and Dave. Luke went 3/3.

Game 18, August 25, 2010 vs VooDoo TOAD Fury
by Keith Martin

Goats Melted by TOADS, 15-30

With Tom and Dave out of town, and Lloyd out of town, and Keith possibly stuck testing, the Baton of Leadership was conferred upon Keizo and Larry. Greg got stuck with the equipment. As threatening clouds rolled in (they threatened to lower the temperature to the low 100's) the Goats took the field.

The TOADS were out for revenge and had a full crew for the undertaking. The Goats were mercied in the 3rd but bit back to within four. After the Goats went 3up-3down in the 4th, Keizo threw the Baton into the mirage and abandoned ship. That might have also been the inning that Charlie declared Wonder Boy illegal and threw it out (except for use by the Goat Girls). With only Larry to guide us, the Goats managed only two runs in the 5th and a lone single in the 6th. Game Over.

The surprise player du jour was Emma, who made her first game of the season. Cheerleading was deftly handled by Sonya.

Defense Highlights include a good relay by Alex to nail a runner at the plate. Luke had a couple good plays at 3rd and he and Alex had a few near misses. Greg caught a fly in the fierce Sun porch in right and then did his Liana hamster dance impression. Larry, unused to fielding batted balls at first base, gobbled up a grounder and stepped on both bases before colliding with (and also tagging?) the batter. For you rookies, that's called "covering all the bases".

Offensive Highlights include a home run by Larry, triples by Larry and Uyen-Uyen, and doubles by Luke (2), Greg, Jennifer, Keith, and Alex. Keith and Marc went 3/3. Hard luck cases include Bob and Alex who had hard line drives that went for outs. Luke hit a monster fly ball that had too much air under it and was flagged down after a long run. Jennifer also had a shot that was nabbed on a good play.

Game 19, August 31, 2010 @ Bruisers
by Keith Martin

Goats Lose to Bruisers 6-11

Both Derek and Sonya went on the DL just prior to game time, and managers Tom and Dave were away. Other than that, it was a perfect night for a game. The teams exchanged leads in the first two innings. After that, the Goats could only push one run across. Fearing the famous Goat Rallies of the 6th and 7th innings, the Bruisers waited until the 4th inning to mention their post-game "party" and could we please end it in the 5th? Hey, I thought The Game was the party! Maybe we could just call this game "suspended" and finish it next year ...

Defensive highlights include good relays from all of the outfielders. Liana and Jackie almost collided on a ball that Liana almost got to. Glenn and Luke almost collided on a ball that Luke did get to. Bob kept a runner from scoring with a strike to the plate, but Keizo refused to pickle the runner.

Offensive highlights were few. Doubles were had by Luke and Keith (2). Luke went 2/2.

Thanks, Goats, for another fun season.
