2001 Game Summaries

Practice April 5, 2001

It was a chilly late afternoon as the Goats got together after a long winter. It was great to see the returning Goats as well as the rookie Goats. One of the rookies, Julie, when asked where she'd like to play said "on the bench", but she did great in the field and at bat so I don't think "on the bench" is the right place. Lloyd gave out batting tips to Susan and Leslie who showed that they can hit and hopefully confuse our opponents. Dave also had a few long hits that looked quite easy for him. He said that he had a deal with the softball to make him look good.

Game 1, April 17, 2001 vs Deep Space Cadets

Five Goat rookies made their debut: Julie, Susan, Gary, David and Paul. Offensively, the Goat bats were moderately successful, but silent when really needed. Stealth Award: Chris slinked in to home behind an unsuspecting catcher. Defensively, balls went over, around, and through our vaunted Swiss Cheese Early-Season Defense. Flop of the Game: Keith went airborne, but still came up empty. Batting highlights include homeruns by Bryan and Gary, a triple by David H. and doubles by Bryan, Keith (2), Tom, Chris, Ron (2) and Gary. Final score Goat Scouts 18, Deep Space Cadets 26, OUCH!

Game 2, April 24, 2001, vs Paper Tigers

What a beautiful night for a softball game. The weather was perfect but the stench was sometimes overpowering. Combination warm weather and a little breeze. The game was in our grasp to win, but alas our defense was worn down by the opponents hitting. Our thoughts go out to one of the Paper Tigers who took quite a spill early in the game and ended up in the hospital with a dislocated and broken elbow. A couple highlights included Keith sliding in to 2nd base to avoid a collision and ending up with quite a grass stain and Ron leaving a skid mark diving for a foul ball off third. On the sidelines Kevin annoys just about every Goat with his endless questions. Batting highlights include a triple by Gary and doubles by Keith, Bryan and Donna. Final score Goat Scouts 20, Paper Tigers 24 (or 23 if you ask me).

Game 3, May 1, 2001, vs Crawdads

Another rookie makes his debut: Ian and it's also the first game with snacks. Defensively in the first inning all infielders touch the ball and on the sidelines the good plays are attributed to the "Cheetos". While playing catcher Ron "I've got a seed in my mouth" Murillo is unable to call foul balls loudly. Offensively David H. nearly passes Bryan running the bases in what is termed "A Donna Base Ballet Classic!" Speaking of ballet, Tammy is light on her toes playing 1st base, making the base coach really pay attention. Most of the game wasn't as close as the final score, however our opponents never gave up, while the Goats only tried to cruise after the big 9 run 2nd inning. Batting highlighs were few and include homeruns by Lloyd and David H., triples by Bryan and David H. and doubles by Keith and Tom M. Final score Goat Scouts 15, Crawdads 15.

Game 4, May 10, 2001, vs Lunatic Fringe

For awhile the Goats weren't sure our opponents would be able to field a complete team, but they did with nine players which included one guy who I think only came to watch. Snacks were again the highlight as it was later noted that "Cheetos" are for ties, but "Doritos" are for wins. While Tom M. was eating sunflower seeds, Lloyd commented that "we always thought Tom M. was seedy". Tom M. replied "at least I'm not cheesy!" Reminder to Bryan, if the grass stains don't come out of Ashley's shorts, you owe her a new pair! Lastly to "Hoover" Hernandez after having some trouble in the field, "you were so much better when you and Ronda were only dating". Defensively the Goats played great until the later innings. I think the "old" Goats just get tired! Batting highlights include homeruns by Bryan and Tom M. and doubles by Bryan, David H., Larry, Tammy and Gary. Final score Goat Scouts 22, Lunatic Fringe 13.

Game 5, May 17, 2001, vs Voodoo TOAD Fury

Ahh...the TOADs. The biggest question of the night was when are the TOADs showing up and when will the game ever start? Having the commissioner of C-league be your manager must get you special privileges, because most of the TOADs, including Charlie, didn't show up until well after 5:30 and the game didn't begin until 5:50! Obviously the Goats were out played in this game as the TOADs just hit it where we weren't. The Goats struggled at bat, having to settle for a lot of singles. As Bryan overthrew to Tammy at 1st, Keith noted that Bryan picked that up from watching him do that many times. The Goats did have some defensive highlights including the one inning the TOADs did not score. This included one well placed hit by Charlie to Miki who threw him out at 1st. Batting highlights include a grand slam homerun by Keith and a double by Bryan. Final score Goat Scouts 12, Voodoo TOAD Fury 25.

Game 6, May 22, 2001, vs Eclectic Eccentrics

The "old" Goats return! I think the huge loss last week inspired everyone to play their hearts out this week and it really showed. It was also determined that Nacho Doritos are the snack of choice for winning softball games. Defensively the Goats didn't let many balls get past them. In fact Bryan jumped a mile to catch a line drive for the 3rd out in one inning and the infield as a whole didn't let many balls through to the outfield. Art looked very at ease back on the field in left and Chris was bummed that no one hit it towards him in Center. The closest fly ball towards center was caught by our rover Leslie. Batting highlights include homeruns by Bryan, Keith, Lloyd and Art and doubles by Bryan, Keith, Lloyd and Chris. Final score Goat Scouts 17, Eclectic Eccentrics 7.

Game 7, May 30, 2001, vs Gravity Fielders

No game played today. The Gravity Fielders were unable to field a team, whereas the Goats were ready to play with 13 players definite and 5 maybes.

Game 8, June 7, 2001, vs Bruisers

The visiting Goats took an early lead, and never looked back. The Goats had the Bruisers in mercy by the ?th inning. Why couldn't the Lakers do as well with a little time between games? Shuichi Isikawa made his Goat debut, and brother Keizo showed up for the first time this year.

Defensively, the Goats played their best game of the season. There were no multiple-error plays and everybody, except Art, had their horns into the game. For the second game in a row, the Goat outfield relayed the ball well and cut down a runner at the plate. Keith is starting to feel like Mike Scioscia. (Better luck next time, Karen... : ) Ian made a good stab on a grounder at 3rd, and Leslie nabbed a hot liner at 2nd. Bryan climbed the ladder for a line drive at Short, and the Bruisers couldn't believe it. Who says old goats can't jump? Tom H. had a good diving stop in Left. I thought he made the catch, but it went as a single.

Offensively, the Goats ran wild - taking many extra bases. Keizo and Shuichi both stole home on the same play. What speed! Batting hightlights include homeruns by Keith and Lloyd, triples by Keith and Lloyd and doubles by Bryan, Tom M., and Chris.

$50 fine and quote of the day to Chris, for advancing to 3rd, which was occupied by Lloyd. Lloyd was forced to steal home - I hate it when that happens! Chris later said, "What, I thought you (Lloyd) were the 3rd base coach!" Ok, so you thought he was the coach. Did he tell you to advance??? Second favorite quote to Tammy: "No Donna? ... No Doritos!!" : (

Other Kodak moments: Tom M's expression after the One That Got Away (over his head for a Bruiser homerun) and Bryan's overthrow from Short which nailed the 1st base coach in the chest. The coach didn't hardly notice that he'd been hit, since he was so busy eating an early dinner! (Karen, your team needs more work on the fundamentals - like SHARING.) Final score Goat Scouts 20, Bruisers 5.

Game 9, June 14, 2001, vs Wild-IR Turkeys

So many men, so few women! The game started with 14 guys and 2 girls and lucky for Paula and Donna, Susan showed up by the end of the 1st inning. Al Sirota made his debut and kept asking for someone to hit the ball to him in right field. Tammy, where were you? The Doritos were here this week!

Keizo - nice triple - better mega-flop into 3rd, or rather, two feet short of 3rd! We'll get started on those sliding lessons real soon... Ron got a Texas League double on a pop up that fell between Short & Left. He coulda had a homer? Art had a Texas Leaguer too, but the pitcher made the catch. It went a mile, but it was straight up.

Defensively the Goat "B" team did not give up any runs. Art had the best boot of the game at Short, on an easy grounder. He went down to one knee (too much outfield time) and the ball somehow rattled around and bounced off his shoe toward 2nd base. Bryan and Donna started a pickle on a runner between 2nd & 3rd. They didn't get the out, but they forced the runner back to 2nd. Everybody wanted in on the action. Tom M. ended up covering 2nd and Chris covered 3rd.

Batting highlights include homeruns by Bryan, Keith (2), Tom M. and Chris, triple by Keizo and doubles by Tom M., Larry and Lloyd. Final score Goat Scouts 19, Wild IR Turkeys 9.

Game 10, June 19, 2001, vs LA Radars

The LA Radars were only able to muster up 5 players, whereas the Goats had plenty. The teams decided to go ahead and play anyway, so Ron, Tom M., Ian, Keizo and Shuichi joined the LA Radars and played the rest of the Goats with Kevin Hoffman making his debut. The game was pretty even through the first two innings until the Goats scored 7 runs in the 3rd and 6 in the 4th to put the LA Radars/Goats in Mercy. No official stats were kept for this game other than the score. Some players did get to try new positions like, Ian pitching, Tom M. at short, Keizo at 1st, Gary at 3rd, Chris at short, Lloyd at 1st and Keith pitching. This was a fun game. Final score Goat Scouts 25, LA Radars/Goats 12.

Game 11, July 5, 2001, vs Wild-IR Turkeys

On a hot muggy evening the Goats and Turkeys once again came together to do battle on the softball field. Earlier in the day, it actually rained and many players wondered if we would even have a game. It was a quick game as the thick air kept the ball in the infield. Defensively, Bryan made a spectacular on the run line drive catch at short and Chris made a great diving catch in left. One of the funniest plays was by Wayne at 3rd as he watched the ball float up and down before it reached him. The best show of the night was watching David H. do push ups in center field, during the game, on an overthrow to 1st. Batting highlights include homeruns by Bryan and Keith and doubles by Bryan and Chris. Final score Goat Scouts 11, Wild-IR Turkeys 4.

Game 12, July 12, 2001, vs Homers

What a game! Defensively the Goat infield was sharp. Bryan and Tammy connect on a double play with a line drive to the pitcher and a throw to 1st catching the runner off base. It was spectacular and stunned the Homers! Scoring was close early on and then the Goats scored 8 runs in the 6th inning during a two out rally to go up 11-7. Tammy hadn't even realized that we won until after shaking hands with the opponents. This was a big win for us and a great confidence booster. Let's keep it up as we will see the Homers again at the end of August. Batting highlights include a lot of singles by all the Goats and homeruns by Keith and David H. Batting 1000 at this game were Keith, Miki, Larry and Shuichi. Final Score Goat Scouts 11, Homers 10.

Game 13, July 18, 2001, vs Cinco Equis

The Goats scored in the first two innings and then were blanked the rest of the day. The batting highlight was Chris, who stretched a double for the only Goat extra-base hit. Larry and Keith suffered hard line-outs to the Equis infield's left side.

Defensively, Lloyd at pitcher worked a line drive double play with Leslie at first. Tom M., at center, fired a bullet to Keith at third for the tag on another greedy base runner. Heard a good story about Leslie at first, fielding a ground ball on the right side and looking back to 1st base to see if either Lloyd or Keizo were covering. Since neither were, Leslie made the play herself. $50 fine to Lloyd for not covering 1st because he didn't want to get his shoes wet! If your wife lets you wear the cleats in the house, then I could understand - but I'm sure that's not the case! : )

$100 fine to Keizo, at catcher, for letting a female baserunner take a leadoff 2/3 of the way to 2nd, without throwing to 1st for an easy out - which cost us two runs because the next batter hit a home run.

$50 fine to Ronda Hernandez for showing up after the game was over. Ronda, if you're just coming for dinner, could you try to be a little less obvious? Final score Goat Scouts 8, Cinco Equis 5.

Game 14, July 25, 2001, vs Paper Tigers

Thanks to all of the fans in the bleachers! It was great that so many players and fans showed up considering the poor parking instructions!

Lots of good plays by all the Goats...Miki & Keizo had basket catches in the outfield. Chris had a lot of hustle plays out in Left and ran into the goal post with his jaw. Ron stopped a ball at 3rd that knocked him to the ground. Lloyd had a great unassisted rundown on a runner between 2nd and 3rd. Wow!

Offensively, the Goats were able to string together hits and put runs on the board. Aggressive running by Ron got him a double in a close play at 2nd. Keith stole 2nd from Holly after she dropped the ball at 1st. Ouch! Good base running by Tom H. allowed Tammy to reach safely on an infield hit.

No fines for Keizo this week - what's up with that? $50 fine to Keith for making another fine tag at home plate. We hope the ball is in the glove next time...

Batting highlights include triples by Bryan, Chris and Gary (this one put us in the Mercy rule) and doubles by Chris, Ron and Tom H. Final score Goat Scouts 18, Paper Tigers 9.

Game 15, July 31, 2001, vs Deep Space Cadets

Another fun, high scoring game the had the Goats in the lead until the end of the 6th inning when the Cadets moved ahead by 2. This did not deter the Goats as they answered with 13 runs in the top of the 7th setting up a mercy condition and then held the Cadets to 1 run in the bottom of the 7th.

Defensively Susan snagged a hot line drive at rover that totally surprised her and almost got another. Later Susan took a few for the team when her leg was used to stop the ball a few times while playing 2nd base. A great heads up play by Bryan throwing in to Keith for the tag out at home preventing a run. Kezio commented that he "would be just as good as Bryan, if he had his skills!" Lloyd and Leslie worked another double play. Chris made a nice sliding catch at center, while backing up Paul in right. Ian made a nice stop at home to save a run.

Offensively, the batting was outstanding as the Goats scored early and often. Who was that coaching at 3rd that sent Lloyd home on his long triple only to be tagged out a home plate? $50 fine to Keith for that play and another $50 for not running on a hit that bounced a foot in front of the plate and was fielded by the catcher before going foul. The Cadets catcher then ran to first for the out as Keith just stood in the batters box to stunned to move. Don't worry Keith, a lot of Goats were confused by that play.

Batting highlights include homeruns by Keith and Chris, triples by Lloyd, Tom M. and Bryan and doubles by Keith (2), Larry, Gary and Tom M. Final score Goat Scouts 32, Deep Space Cadets 22.

Game 16, August 14, 2001, vs Voodoo TOAD Fury

On a warm Tuesday afternoon, the Goats took to the field against the TOADs, on time I might add, trying to avenge an early season loss. The TOADs started the game quickly with a six run first inning and never looked back. The Goats had to play most of the game shorthanded as only two women were playing until Leslie came midway through the game. Donna, we really need your help in more ways than one. The interim scorer did make a mistake, accidentally skipping David H. in the batting order in the sixth inning, and David claimed after the game "I would have scored ten runs by myself if I had batted." The TOADS were scoring so often they went up by 11 in the third inning before the mercy rule went into effect, the Goats could never get the deficit under ten : (

The game did have some highlights, Miki was a star at second getting a lot of action. Having a little trouble throwing the ball, she decided to catch nearly everything that came her way, including two high fly balls. She also made a few good stops keeping the ball in the infield. Keizo in left field was not as fortunate, as he pulled a muscle running after a ball, but did get two hits with a pinch runner after his fielding day was over. Maybe he should use the pinch runner more often. On the offensive side of the ball Bryan hit a long home run to left that many TOADs thought was foul, but the catcher didn't say anything!

The best part of the game was Ian answering his cell phone while behind the plate. We thought it was either his agent or broker, but a TOAD, Charlie, claimed it crimped his batting style. Batting highlights include homeruns by Bryan and Chris and doubles by Bryan, Keizo, Chris and Gary. Final score (Ouch!) Goat Scouts 12, Voodoo TOAD Fury 22.

Game 17, August 22, 2001, vs Bruisers

The managers took the night off and did not venture onto the field. From our vantage point it looked like another fun game.

Kareem made his first appearance this season, and was in mid-season form. Have you been moonlighting with another team?

The Goats would have started an all girl infield of Tammy, Susan, Paula, and Leslie, but for the second week in a row some of the girls showed up late. Keizo made a nice diving catch at Pitcher, which caused a new bruise on top of last weeks' bruise, so he had to be yanked after only a couple innings. But, he gets the win in his first start, and Big Al gets the save despite letting the Bruisers nibble into the lead.

Keizo hit a homer despite the bad wheels (shades of Don Johnson). All of Chris's hits were for extra bases. Susan was robbed of an infield hit because we had no first base coach. $50 Fines to the missing base coaches - you know who you should have been. Batting highlights include homeruns by Tom M., Keizo and Paula, triples by Chris and doubles by Chris (3), Tom M. and Shuichi. Final score Goat Scouts 14, Bruisers 9.

Game 18, August 30, 2001, vs Homers

Goat Rookie Dave Sieving made his debut. Now, wasn't this at least as much fun as Mars?? Welcome aboard! $50 Fine for waiting until the last scheduled game of the season.

Thanks to the Gutsy Goat Girls, playing in pain. Miki and Tammy came through without additional injury. Tammy, just because Keizo has a new injury every week, don't think that you have to too. Donna was out on medical leave, and we hope she's doing well!

Defensively, the Goats had a very good game. The Homers were unable to sustain any rallies - they got all their runs by slamming homers. Leslie had a great one-handed inning-squashing three-run-saving catch at Rover, ranging far to her left. Chris had another nice sliding shoestring catch at Left. Only Tim Salmon of the Angels has more. Gary, in Right, threw out Karen Chan at 1st, on what she thought was a sure single (she hit the ball too well). The bizarre play of the game came on a Homer homer in the 7th. A soccer player relayed to Chris, who threw to Bryan, who threw to the gutter. One sport at a time, guys!

Offensively, the Goats scored in every inning. Wayne got his first extra base hit of the season, and you guessed it, it was a homer. Gary added one, and Dave Herman had a perfect day with two. Every Goat reached safely, except Tom H., who can at least claim that his hard line out to the Pitcher was better than some Goat and Homer hits.

Keith set up the field well north of where we normally set up, since there was a large pool of water around one of the sprinklers. That sprinkler would have been about at second base, so he moved the field to put the sprinkler in foul ground off of 1st. (That's why the soccer players were encroaching on our space - because we moved into theirs.)

Gary was the only player on either team to go mano a mano with the swamp. Or is that pie a pie? Gary took water again after the game when he ran a bat to Keith, who had the equipment bag.

Another embarrassing moment in Goat History...Gary, a little dirt and grass stains are great - they make it look like you hustle and are doing something good for the team. But, hey, we're not playing rugby out here! The only other batting highlight not mentioned was a double by Keith. Final score Goat Scouts 18, Homers 9.
