2000 Season Record - 12 wins, 2 losses and 3 forfeits

2000 Game Summaries

Practice April 6, 2000

A lot of old goats and new goats showed up to practice. Keith, Pete and Lloyd each tried their hand at pitching. Lloyd was especially good at tiring out Donna as he pitched them one after another and barely gave her time to reset. The bats were mighty and I think our opponents should look out because the GOAT SCOUTS are back!

Practice April 11, 2000

More new goats and some old favorites showed up. Lloyd had a great idea to give each person equal time at batting practice. Everyone got at least 10 good hits in and some got more. The batting still looks good, but fielding is a different story. I think there were just too many people in the field. Remember to call your name if you have the best shot at catching the ball then your nearest teammate. There were nearly a couple of collisions due to some over zealous play. This is probably something that won't happen during games, just remember to call it! Let's have a great season.

Game 1, April 20, 2000 vs Cinco Equis

What a crowd, what an opener. Lots of Goats came to play and friends of goats came to cheer them on. It was a beautiful day for a ballgame. The Goats were very fortunate to come away with a win. Our opponents were quite good and kept us on our toes. Someone asked why Bryan got to bat first when he showed up late. The answer is that he inspires us to play our best and sets the batting standard. It should be noted that he hit a home run to start us out and it was a nice answer to what our opponents did. Other batting highlights include: doubles by Larry and Tom H. (2), triples by Bryan and Alan and homers by Paula and Lloyd. Final score Goat Scouts 20, Cinco Equis 17

Game 2, April 25, 2000, vs Homers

Wow, what a game! Last week one of the Homers asked if we had a picture of a crying goat. He thought we would need it for this page after the game against them, but the Goat Scouts came through, big time. It was a very offensive type game, lots of scoring by both teams. The Homers hit 'em where we weren't and the Goats hit 'em where they weren't. There were a few very notable defensive plays namely some big catches in the outfield by Tom H., Art, Wayne and Tom M. In the infield there was Lui with a couple diving catches at third, Leslie at second and the best body protection catch, that knocked her down, but she held on to the ball, of a very fast line drive down first base, by Tracy. A game saving play to be sure. The rookies are really coming through and those that recruited them couldn't be prouder. Batting highlights include: homeruns by Bryan, Lui, Tom H., Tom M and Art, a triple by Bryan and doubles by Tracy, Larry, Chris (2), Tom M. and Wayne. Final score Goat Scouts 35, Homers 30

Game 3, May 1, 2000, vs OAO UTA Hackers

What a difference a week makes. Last week the teams were all offense and this week it was all defense. The Goats achieved 4 double plays in one game. This is believed to be a record. There was a line drive to Keith who threw to Paula at 1st, a grounder to Lloyd who threw to Bryan at 2nd and he threw to Paula at 1st, a grounder to Keith who threw to Leslie at 2nd and then she threw to Paula at 1st and finally a line drive to Bryan who threw to Miki at 2nd. Batting highlights include: homerun by Bryan and doubles by Bryan, Alan and Art. Final score Goat Scouts 15, OAO UTA Hackers 4

Game 4, May 9, 2000, vs Eclectic Eccentrics

Lots of Goats came out to play this week and the game went back and forth. The Eclectic Eccentrics would be ahead and then the Goats would be ahead, but in the end the Goats were unable to hold off the pursuit and gave up a game winning Grand Slam. However, Don hit his own Grand Slam in the third inning. The quote of the evening goes to Art as he asks Tom M. if he's "swinging at blimps" during his first at bat. Other batting highlights include: homeruns by Bryan, Chris and Lloyd, triples by Tom M. and Pete and doubles by Bryan, Keith, Tom M., Art and Lui. Final score Goat Scouts 19, Eclectic Eccentrics 21

Game 5, May 17, 2000, vs L.A. Radars

What a nice evening for a softball game. This was another pretty even game. The Goats would pull ahead and then the Radars would tie. In the end the Goat defense held them off. At the end of the 6th the Radars wanted to stop, but the Goats wanted to continue. However after our batters got out 1-2-3, we wanted to stop. Thank goodness the Goats were able to hold off their batters. Lots of highlights in this game including Miki discussing Tom M.'s base coaching at 3rd. He needs to be more vocal when the women are running. Bryan snagged a line drive and threw to Miki at 2nd for a double play to end the 3rd inning. In the 7th inning Paula has Miki rub her bat for luck since Miki had just hit a homerun in the 6th with the same bat. Unfortunately it didn't work for Paula. Base running got aggressive as both Art and Tom M. stretch base hits by others to get them home. Part luck and part errors. Batting highlights include: homeruns by Bryan, Lloyd, Miki and Chris, triple by Ron and a double by Larry. Final score Goat Scouts 13, L.A. Radars 10

Game 6, May 23, 2000, vs Voodoo TOAD Fury

The day started out bleak and overcast and by game time the sun was trying to peak through the clouds. This weather did not keep us from playing a wonderfully defensive game. During the warm up everyone wished for a camera to capture Art talking on his cel phone and catching the ball. Also right before the game began, Tom M. crawled in to the sewer to retrieve Stuart's ball as Chris looked on and then Tom M. tried to sit on Art's lap. As stated above, this was a very defensive game as the Goats held the TOADS to just 1 run through the first 4 innings. In the bottom of the 5th the TOADS tied the GOATS at 4 runs. By the end of the 7th inning the score was tied at 5 runs each and it wasn't even 7pm yet, so we played an extra inning and came away with a victory. The few batting highlights include: triples by Chris and Tom M., and doubles by Bryan, Chris and Tom M. Final score Goat Scouts 7, Voodoo TOAD Fury 5

The Goats now have wins over both rivals so it's already been a successful season and it's not even half over!

Game 7, June 7, 2000, vs Crawdads

The sun was shining, it wasn't too cold or too hot and it was time to play ball again after a bye week. This game started out very defensive, considering the score at the end of the 2nd was 0-1, but by the end of the 3rd it was 8-1. The Goats scored more runs in that one inning then they did in the whole game against the TOADS. However the 3rd inning was not without controversy. The first batter, Pete, tried to stretch a single into a double and was called safe by the Crawdads, but out by Tom C. It didn't matter because the Goats went on to score 8 runs. Also that same inning, Lloyd hit a triple and nearly caught up to Art who was running ahead of him. I think if Art had run a bit faster, Lloyd just might have gotten a homerun. The best "body sacrifice" goes to Miki in the bottom of the 4th inning who stopped the ball with her foot and kept the runner from getting extra bases. Team EMT, Lloyd, got a blue ice pack from his car to help stop the swelling. Batting highlights include: a homerun by Keith and triples by Paula and Lloyd. Final score Goat Scouts 12, Crawdads 4

Game 8, June 15, 2000, vs Gravity Fielders

Wow, what a game! In the 1st inning the first three Gravity Fielders to bat hit homeruns. The Goats were stunned, but then it was their turn and our first two batters hit homeruns. Seven runs were scored in the 1st and 3rd innings when the mercy rule was invoked. In the 4th inning after the Goats scored 10 more runs the second mercy rule was invoked. "Injury of the game" went to Donna who was a runner on third base when Bryan came up to bat and lined it straight down the third base line and smacked her left calf. Peter G. had a first aid kit on hand with an ice pack and team EMT, Lloyd, got the blue ice pack for her. In "the player to be fined announcement", Chris didn't run to 1st base on an infield pop-up until it dropped between three players. He got lucky though as he was still able to get to first base. Batting highlights include: homeruns by Bryan and Keith, doubles by Bryan, Keith, Miki, Chris (2), Tom C. (2), Lesley, Don (2), Alan (2), Pete (3), Lui and Lloyd (2). Final score Goat Scouts 29, Gravity Fielders 8

Game 9, June 19, 2000, vs Bruisers

A beautiful evening for a game, Goat Scouts or Lakers? On the night the Lakers win the NBA Championship, the Goats also won. It was another game of great batting and good fielding. Miki learned what it was like to be running in front of a homerun hitter (Chris) who catches up and is right behind you by the time you're midway to third. She was definitely out of breath and more sympathetic to Donna who's had this happen often. Leslie is our official "secret weapon" in right field. She gets tested by the batters and always comes through. Keith noted that Don made a nice pirouette catch at first base. On the sidelines Chris shared his laundry skills with the team too much of our amusement. The Goats mercied the Bruisers in the 2nd inning and double mercied them in the 4th. Other batting highlights include: homerun by Don, triples by Keith, Tom C., Don and Tom H. and doubles by Keith (2), Chris (2), Keizo and Lloyd (3). Final score Goat Scouts 29, Bruisers 9

Game 10, June 27, 2000, vs Squeeze Play

Great game right before the long holiday weekend. For the first time this season it was triple Tom night! One of the Tom's, H. that is, makes his daughter Ashley crawl in to the sewer after his own mis-thrown ball, thanks a lot dad! Play of the game goes to Keith who keeps the ball from going in to the sewer. Another great highlight was the Goats picking on Art and he wasn't even at the game! Batting highlights include: homeruns by Chris, Tom M. (3) and Lloyd, triples by Bryan, Tom C. and Lloyd and doubles by Bryan, Keith (3), Chris, Wayne, Tom H. (2), Alan and Lloyd. Final score Goat Scouts 27, Squeeze Play 17

Game 11, July 6, 2000, vs Deep Space Cadets

This was a really fun, close game and a battle between the A Goats and B Goats to see who could give up the least amount of runs. It was also a game where everytime someone made a good play or batted well, Keizo took the credit for teaching them how to do it. In the bottom of the 5th inning during warm-up Donna gets hit in the upper arm by the ball thrown from Tom H. to Keizo. Later it is noted that Tom H. leaves the game to go see "Chicken Run". Coincidence? The Goats lead right from the beginning, but the Cadets never give up and pull ahead leading in to the bottom of the 7th where the Goats need 2 runs to tie and 3 to win but are only able to score 1. Batting highlights include: a homerun by Chris and doubles by Keith and Tom M. Final score Goat Scouts 21, Deep Space Cadets 22

Game 12, July 12, 2000, vs On the Fringes

You would think it was July by the weather at the Bowl. It was actually a little chilly and some players wished for jackets to keep warm. In tonights game Wayne debuts as pitcher and holds the Fringes scoreless through 3 innings. Chris came in to pitch in relief and wasn't so lucky. He gave up a 3 run homer that I think Alex is still chasing down. Paolo played in right field where he didn't think he'd get much action and came up with a spectacular catch right in the first inning. Meanwhile on the sidelines Brittney held Larry at water gun point for a short period of time. Batting highlights include: a homerun by Chris and doubles by Tom C, Larry, Keizo and Wayne. Final score Goat Scouts 14, On the Fringes 6

Game 13, July 20, 2000, vs Cinco Equis

Thanks to everyone who showed up to play. So sorry that our opponents did not, except for one guy. He told us that his manager called the Goats manager to say that there would be no game. Unfortunately the message did not reach me. Thanks again to Paula, Tracy, Leslie, Pete, Tom H., Chris, Tom C., Cindy, Tom M., Alex, Al and Stuart for showing up. A few of us even hung out in the heat and did a little batting and fielding practice.

Game 14, July 24, 2000, vs Wild Turkeys

Kudos to all who showed up to play. I wasn't sure at noon if we would have enough to play the entire game. I appreciate the extra efforts of Bob by bringing a friend and especially Paolo and Tom H. Tom H's. daughter Ashley stepped in to play when we were short 1 female to start the game and later when Paula left early. Ashley also batted to keep the 3 to 1 ratio of male to female batters in the line up. Paolo's wife Lisa stepped up to the plate, after I had to promise she could have a runner, to bat in place of Paula. Bob's friend Oliver hit a homerun during his first at bat. Thanks everyone. This game also debutted me, Donna, at 2nd base where I'm happy to report that I did not get hurt. I actually caught two fly balls and assisted on a put out. Leslie also made a spectacular catch of a high pop up in short left. Boo hiss to Al and Chris who both got tagged out trying to stretch doubles into triples. Listen to the 3rd base coach, that's why they're there. Other batting highlights include: homeruns by Chris, Don and Oliver, triples by Tom C. and Tom H., and doubles by Tom H., Stuart and Bob. Final Score Goat Scouts 18, Wild Turkeys 12

Game 15, August 3, 2000, vs IR Sox

Welcome back Miki, Bryan, Keith and Larry! It feels like a month since we last saw you. Too bad the IR Sox couldn't put a full team together. It was fun to play a game with your own teammates pitching to you. Keizo and Tom C. were the first defectors to go play with the IR Sox so that we could have some type of game. Tom C., Bryan and the manager of the IR Sox did try to get the Bruisers to come over and help out IR Sox, but they decided to have batting practice. Tom C. was hoping that stats were being kept because he hit a homerun against his teammates. Sorry to tell you, but since it was an unofficial game no stats were kept. Here are some interesting things noted during the game by Paula: Don forced Keith to slide into Chris, er home, $50 fine!, Donna accidently scratched Don's brand spankin' new bat as she slid a bat out of the field of play and Bryan chased Miki across home after hitting a homerun that Tom C. is still chasing down in center field. Unofficial final score Goat Scouts 15, IR Sox 15. Note: Bryan wanted to keep playing, but it was 7:20pm and many of us were tired, ok, maybe just me!

Game 16, August 7, 2000, vs Squeeze Play

The Homers tried to get a team together to fill in our gap in the schedule, but both teams were unable to get it together in time with confidence. Sorry to hear that Squeeze Play dropped out of the league. Fortunately we played them previously at the end of June. I think they were the team where they only fielded one woman and she got tired batting after every third batter.

Game 17, August 23, 2000, vs Paper Tigers

On the night of the final Survivor show, the Goats and Tigers took to the field to see who would survive and win the game. Unlike Survivor the series, we did not vote anyone off the team, although it was suggested after the Goats got off to a rocky start in the 1st inning! But, hey it was expected, the Goats had not played an official game in a month. Early in the game Bryan took a hard line drive to his left wrist and was rewarded with some lace marks as a souvenir. Tom M. was in rare form. He was throwing some great one liners, like "he swung the bat like the Santa Ana winds" and who could forget "when a bat feels like a toothpick in your hand, then you know you're buff" and the best of the best was the question about Al running to first "Did you run out of gas and refuel?" Keith fined Keizo $50 for not going after the dribbler near home plate. Keizo's excuse was he's old and can't hustle like the young guys. Bryan tried to squeeze a double in to a triple and was tagged out at third. So later when Miki achieved a triple she "burns" Bryan by saying that she made it safely. Other batting highlights include: homeruns by Chris and Tom C., triples by Miki (2) and Bryan and doubles by Tom C., Paula and Bryan. Final score Goat Scouts 11, Paper Tigers 9

Thanks for a great season Goat Scouts! Our record was 12 wins, 2 losses, and 3 forfeits by our opponents. Keep watching this web site for pictures from this season and stay in shape and be ready to play again in 2001.
